Mom's Memory Rug RR003b

This is the birth of this rug. These are some of the actual strips I cut originally for this rug. This material happens to be what used to be called "double knit".

Mom's Memory Rug RR003c

This is a pile of braid prior to my starting to sew the rug. On this rug, since I was using a specific set of scraps/material, and I didn't care about the size (more about the memories), I braided all I had first, then started sewing. This is just a part of the braid I used.

This is another view of the long braid so you can see what it looks like in braid form and how different it comes together in the end result. It's best if you use shorter pieces at the beginning of the rug as it breaks the monotony in the inner rug circle.

This picture shows the actual stitching on the bottom side of the rug. Needle is about 1 1/2in long, can also use curved needle. Thread is small size cotton doily crochet thread. Make sure to work off the same side of the braid (don't twist) for entire rug. I use a straight pin to keep track of which side of the braid is the finished side.

Mom's Memory Rug RR003f

This shows the rug partially done with braid hanging, ready to be sewn on. It's about 2 ft in diameter at this point.

Mom's Memory Rug RR003g

This shows the rug partially completed and also shows how much more braid it took to make it the finished size.

Mom's Memory Rug RR003h

This shows the rug from the underside. This is the side you sew on and per tradition, the side that faces up for 'everyday' use and wear/tear (although most people nowadays just put this side down to the floor and leave it).

Mom's Memory Rug RR003i

Although my flash was a little bright, you can see that this shows the upper side,(the finished side) traditionally the side that is turned to face up just before company comes.(Today most people just put the finished side up all the time.) You may see occasional stitches on this side but very few and basically they aren't visible when you're standing up looking at it and it's on the floor.

Mom's Memory Rug RR003a

This is a rug made from the material scraps given to me by my grandmother that she saved from making clothes for herself, my mom and her siblings. Now my mom can look at this rug and remember fond times growing up as she points out "that was my dress",  "my sister had a shirt made from that material" and "that sure reminds me of mama" and she studies the different  materials included in the rug. This rug is approximately 4ft in diameter.
